Very early “computers” of the 1940’s used relays and tubes and did calculations for the war effort. In the 1950’s the development of the transistor made the computers more effective. As more computing power was needed and technology advanced, computers got larger and larger until they filled large rooms with large air conditioners to remove the generated heat. They were primarily used for big scientific calculations.
The late 1960’s into the 1970’s saw the mini computers for small businesses and home hobbyists. Instead of designing a mechanical device for a specific purpose, a mini computer could be bought off the shelf and programmed to do that specific purpose. Memory was expensive and accessories like monitors and program storage were expensive so were often sold separately. The Apple computer Lisa of 1983 was the first to have a GUI (Graphical User Interface) which allows point and click. Before that, everything was typed and computers computed.
Modern computers have video, color displays, internet, spreadsheets, word processors, graphic design tools, millions of games, shopping, apps, email, and now artificial intelligence (AI). Early computers did not. Our computer display spans from the 1960's to the 1980's.
