A tungar bulb is a half-wave rectifier used in power supplies. This model can handle higher voltages so it can be used in charging 1 to 12 automobile batteries in series. The discharge medium is argon gas which allows for quick starting.
Invented in 1917, it remained popular until efficient solid state rectifiers became available in the 1950s.
