This 1928 forerunner to the oscilloscope has a wire carrying the observed current. It is fixed in a strong magnetic field. The wire will move proportionally to the current going through it.
The beam of a strong lamp is focused on the center of the wire and the wire’s shadow will fall on a rotating mirror and on a viewing screen.
