Adjustable transformer. Variac is short for Variable AC. General Radio was the first to introduce the Variac in 1933. It is a tool used to adjust the house voltage to a range of 0-140 VAC for testing radios and other circuits.
It is used for troubleshooting. A lower voltage will lower the current which allows problems to be spotted before components are damaged.
