The majority of the CB radios were donated by Richard Reese of Port Charlotte, FL. It represents 30 years of CB radio collecting from 1960 to 1990. CB radio is short for Citizens Band Radio. In 1945 the FCC reserved 23 AM channels for public access without a specialized license. It was expanded to 40 channels in 1977 during the height of the CB craze. They became essential for truckers in the 1970’s due to nationwide fuel shortages and the 55 mph speed limit to coordinate fuel stops, avoid road hazards, weather issues, and communicate speed traps. But anyone could get a CB radio for their car or for a home base. The film “Smokey and the Bandit” with its theme song “Convoy” helped bring the lingo and the fun of CB radios to the general public. CB radios are still used today, especially in regions with poor cellular coverage.
